Diabetes is a systemic disease that has many complications including an increase in bone fragility. Bone fragility is usually healed through mechanical stimulation that is detected by osteocytes; however, little is known on this process in connection to diabetes. For my project in the lab, I am working with a master’s student, Madeleine Bareau, in order to examine the role of osteocytes in diabetes. Specifically I will be looking at the mechanical response of osteocytes in hyperglycemic condition and the role of anti-hyperglycemic medication in this response. I also will undertake a second project to examine a new osteocytic cell line, OCY454 cells in comparison to the current cell line being use, MLOY4.
